ABOUT THIS HOTFIX

PURPOSE

This HotFix resolves an issue that caused some
Windows 95 and Windows 98 systems to repeatedly
start a dial-up networking session whenever
VirusScan TC v6.0 software started, or that
caused VirusScan TC to hang as it started.

The HotFix replaces the file NLEVENT.DLL.

RESOLVED ISSUE

VirusScan TC v6.0 software will occasionally
hang as it starts on Windows 95 or Windows 98
systems. In some cases, mobile systems will
repeatedly try to dial into a network, or
connect via ISDN or other methods, whenever
VirusScan TC software starts or runs a scan
task.

In each of these cases, VirusScan TC software
uses GetHostByName, a standard Windows function,
to identify the IP address for machines to which
it connects. The software does so in order to
obtain information for event reporting that
allows system administrators to track virus
origins and related information.

If VirusScan TC software runs on a mobile system
that cannot connect to a host network, or if
network problems delay networked systems, the
application must wait for the GetHostByName
function to time out before it can continue.

This HotFix modifies NLEVENT.DLL so that you can
set it not to ask for IP address information.
This will prevent VirusScan TC software from
hanging or attempting to connect to a network.

To activate the HotFix once you install it, you
must create a new registry key value. See
"Additional Information" later in this file.

FILES INCLUDED WITH THIS HOTFIX

This HotFix consists of a package called
VTC600A.ZIP, which contains a new NLEVENT.DLL
file. The complete HotFix package consists of
these files:

   HOTFIXA.TXT = This text file
   NLEVENT.DLL = VirusScan internal event
                  processing library
PACKING.LST = Packing list for HotFix files

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

To use this HotFix, you must have VirusScan TC
v6.0 anti-virus software installed on the
computer you intend to update with the HotFix
software.

PREPARING TO INSTALL THIS HOTFIX

To install this HotFix:

1. Create a temporary directory on your hard
    drive.

2. Extract the HotFix files to that temporary
    directory.

You might also want to make a backup copy of the
NLEVENT.DLL file you have already installed on
your system. Copy this file to a different
directory, or rename the file with a different
extension.

INSTALLATION STEPS

1. After exctracting the hotfix file to a temp
   directory, rename the file NLEVENT.DLL
   to NLEVENT.NEW.

2. Copy the renamed file to the following
   location:

      <drive>:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\McPal

3. Reboot the computer in MS-DOS mode

4. At the MS-DOS command prompt, change
directories to the location shown in Step 2.

5. Rename NLEVENT.DLL to NLEVENT.OLD.

6. Rename NLEVENT.NEW to NLEVENT.DLL.

7. Reboot the computer.

REMOVING THIS HOTFIX

To remove this HotFix from your computer, follow
the steps that appear in "Installation Steps"
earlier in this file. This time, however, copy
the older version of the NLEVENT.DLL file that
you backed up into the Network Associates Common
Files directory. See "Preparing to Install This
HotFix" earlier in this file to learn more about
this step.

NOTE

McAfee recommends that you do NOT remove
the HotFix file from the Common Files
directory once you install it. If you
reinstall your VirusScan TC v6.0, McAfee
recommends that you also reinstall the new
   NLEVENT.DLL file.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

To prevent VirusScan software from trying to
obtain IP address information, you must install
the updated NLEVENT.DLL file, then create a new
registry key value. To learn how to install the
HotFix file, see "Installation Steps" earlier in
this file.

To create the needed registry key value, follow
these steps:

1. Start the Windows registry editor.

2. Locate this registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
      SOFTWARE
        Network Associates
          TVD
            Shared Components
              McLite
                Alerting

3. Create a new DWORD variable with the name
NoIP. Assign a value of zero to this
    variable.

4. Close the registry editor.

The NLEVENT.DLL file included with this HotFix
will detect this value and will not try to
obtain IP addresses from host systems.
