WHAT IS BOOTSCAN?

BootScan is a component of GUI-based Network Associates
anti-virus products. It can be used in place of Scan or
ScanPM for boot-time scanning situations, such as from
the Emergency Disk or when called from AUTOEXEC.BAT.
It has most of the same functionality as Scan and ScanPM,
but scans only executable files and boot sectors, not
documents. It does not support file validation and does
not look for macro viruses.

BOOTSCAN FEATURES

* SUPPORTED PARAMETERS *

BootScan supports all of the same command-line parameters
that SCAN.EXE does, except those that validate files, provide
network support, scan for macro viruses, or perform a few
other miscellaneous functions.

SCAN.EXE options that BootScan does not support are:

/AF
/AV
/CF
/CV
/RF
/RV
/RPTMOD
/ALERTPATH
/NODOC
/CLEANDOCALL
/MACROHEUR
/FAST
/ADN
/VIRLIST
/PLAD

______________________
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

* DEFAULT FILE EXTENSIONS SCANNED *

By default, BootScan will scan files with the following
extensions:

.EXE
.COM
.SYS
.BIN
.OVL
.DLL
.VXD

* .DAT FILES USED *

BootScan uses the same .DAT files as other VirusScan
Command Line products--VirusScan for DOS and ScanPM,
for example.

____________
INSTALLATION

* PRIMARY PROGRAM FILES FOR BOOTSCAN *

      WHATSNEW.TXT = This document
	  SCAN.DAT = Virus scan definition data
	 NAMES.DAT = Virus names definition data
	 CLEAN.DAT = Virus clean definition data
      BOOTSCAN.EXE = Modified ScanPM program

* INSTALLATION STEPS *

To install BootScan on your computer, follow these steps:

1. Make a directory for BootScan on your hard disk.
2. Copy the BootScan files to that directory.
3. Use any DOS text editor to open your AUTOEXEC.BAT
    file, then add the directory you just created to
    the path statement in that file. To learn how
    to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, consult your DOS
    documentation.

* TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *

The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined
effort by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to
implement one standard by which customers can verify
their anti-virus installations.

To test your installation, copy the following line
into its own file, then save the file with the name
EICAR.COM.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

The file size will be 69 or 70 bytes.

Next, start BootScan and allow it to scan the
directory that contains EICAR.COM. When BootScan
scans this file, it will report finding the
EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.

Note that this file is NOT A VIRUS. Delete the file
when you have finished testing your installation to
avoid alarming unsuspecting users.

* UNINSTALLING BOOTSCAN *

To remove BootScan from your hard disk, follow these
steps:

1. If you have edited your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
    start BootScan whenever you boot your computer,
    use any DOS text editor to open your
    AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then remove all lines that
    refer to BootScan.

2. Delete all BootScan files from your hard disk.

DOCUMENTATION
